Uganda (Karamoja region)

At the end of 2007, the worst floods for decades hit the northern regions of Uganda. Thousands of people were temporarily displaced, and there were outbreaks of cholera as well as high demands for medical equipment and consumables.
At the request of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided funds for purchase of medical equipment and health kits. This included cholera-kits, which are concepts for both treatment and prevention of the disease. Further, various medical clinics to provide safe water supply & sanitation, essential drugs, nutrition, and laboratory for local disease control.

The “health partner” in NOREPS, Mediq Norway (previously named Medeco), coordinated the implementation of the donation in Uganda. First to the Gulu and Kitgum regions, then to the Karamoja region.
Early 2009, in connection with a NOREPS visit to Uganda, the WHO invited Mediq Norway to visit the Karamoja region to view the donation/delivery. For information, the Karamoja region is the most neglected region in Uganda. While the WHOs efforts and presence give valuable results, as the enclosed presentation will show, the humanitarian needs are still substantial.
